As I write this, I'm on day nine of the sugar detox. With a more than normal attraction to sugar, I've tried many diets & cleanses to rid myself of the cravings for sweets & other carbohydrates. Until reading the 21-day Sugar Detox, I just followed the steps and did pretty well, but eventually found myself back in the thick of things with my favorite comfort foods. I feel really good physically and seem to find myself more mentally alert than a typical day brings. I believe my current su...more

Fabulous! It's so nice to have what was previously an e-book in a print version. This book will be out at the end of this month (October 2013). I have a pre-release copy because I've helped the author out on her Facebook page and now on the Balanced Bites forums. I recommend the 21-Day Sugar Detox to anyone who wants to 'just step away from the sugar.' This is no gimmicky pre-packaged food or shake program. This is a whole foods based way of eating that retrains your taste buds and stabilizes yo...more
I have just started my second 21 day sugar detox, the first time I did it without the actual book (I just used the yes/no list and made my own meal plan). I had just had a baby and needed to lose quite a few pounds. It went hand and hand with me transitioning to the Paleo lifestyle. It was difficult in the beginning, but really worth it! I lost about 25 pounds and I really did 'bust the sugar cravings.' It is kind of amazing how dependent we are on sugar. I didn't really consider myself that muc...more
If you already know how to eat healthy, yet you still have trouble kicking sugar, this book is a waste of money. Probably all books on kicking sugar will be a waste... it's just not that complicated. You can do it gradually, or you can do it cold turkey. The end.
If you don't know how to eat healthy, this book is a decent place to start, although there are far more clearly written and laid out books. Eating healthy will help you kick sugar, it's true, because your body won't be starved for proper...more

I've already read Practical Paleo, the author's first book, which is a really good summary of the Paleo diet. I read this one just to see how different it was and to pick up some tips for reducing sugar in my diet and my husband's diet. I do like the way she has three levels to try and a little quiz to determine which level is appropriate for you (I was level 3 and my husband was level 1). I wish there was more explanation about full-fat dairy vs. low- and non-fat dairy for levels 1 and 2. She s...more
I’m currently on day 8 of the detox.
I honestly jumped into the detox without the book, but with online resources and guidelines that were easily available on the 21DSD website. As well as a facebook support group to help me on my 21 day journey.
Initially I figured I can do a level 3, but it was clear that I “shouldn’t be a hero” and do a level 1 detox. Haha.
I decided to purchase the book mainly for the recipes and got a lot more than I expected! The book covers the science behind it all in a n...more

The 21-day sugar detox is challenging, make no mistake. I am not a huge traditional sweets person but giving up honey, maple syrup and berries was ROUGH. Every recipe I made had me thinking, 'this would taste SO much better with honey!' That said, this detox made me realize what I truly could and couldn't live without. I am ready to say NO to all white sugar, hidden sugars and grains, alcohol, granola and peanut butter. And I am ready to say YES, PLEASE to my almond flour cranberry orange muffin...more
If you're currently eating a really poor diet and also want to kick the sugar habit, this book is probably really helpful. I've already be 95% sugar free for over 18 months and so was really reading this book out of curiosity, to see if I'd learn anything new. And I really didn't, because I'm the wrong audience for the book. (Hence, I'm giving it 3 start rather than 2 because there's nothing wrong with it, I just already know way too much for it to be useful for me.)
Some interesting recipes. Look forward to trying. Splitting the book into three levels seemed a bit over complicated and probably could have accomplished with a chart of foods to avoid if you need to avoid dairy or nightshade vegetables, but overall easy to read and understand.
I'm just about to embark on the 21 day sugar detox. I read through the book and the recipes look amazing! I already follow semi close to level 1 with a few more treats than I probably need so I'm excited to challenge myself and see how I feel at the end after follow level 3.

Great resource for providing science behind how our bodies handle sugar and why it’s good to detox from it once in awhile. She breaks down the the detox into three levels and encourages readers to follow the one that’s best for them. GREAT menu options, but I couldn’t find her resources online.

My favorite detox ever! I lost 10+lbs on this detox and felt amazing! It was a good start to making some much needed lifestyle changes. Highly recommended.

This one helped me a lot, the recipes were easy to follow and yummy. The allowance of a few fruits helped me stay on track too!
Really informative and a lot of recipes.
I’m starting next week, though it may be rough since I don’t eat animal products.
I still learned a lot and recommend it!

The formatting of this book just didn’t work for me. I did try some of the recipes, specifically the sauces and seasoning but this was by far not my favorite book on changing your diet.
Lots of tasty, healthy recipes and a great plan.

If you know me at all, you know that I have a love/hate relationship with sweets. Whether we're talking about candy, chocolate, baked treats, or ice cream... I am a sucker for it all. I was curious about Sanfilippo's book after reading the success stories of those who were able to overcome their sugar addiction with the help of her 21-day detox, and I had high hopes that it would banish my own cravings and jumpstart a new routine of post-holiday healthy eating habits. Well, it did... Sort of.

I'm not rating this book yet because I haven't tried the program or made any of the recipes.
I've been looking for a program/meal plan to help me cut out sugar for a certain period of time so I can be more aware of how much I'm eating. This was one of the only ones I found that didn't encourage artificial sweeteners. The idea behind this program is similar to the Whole30, which I hated, with two important differences:
1. There are 3 different 'levels' of the 21 Day Sugar Detox. Level 3 is the most...more

I love this book because it includes so many easy to make, sugar-less, paleo recipes. Instructions are straightforward and clear for the most part. Recipes I've tried and enjoyed include: veggie pancakes (I make these all the time), pumpkin pancakes, all of her chicken recipes, greek and asian style meatballs (I make these all the time with either turkey, lamb, or pork), ginger-garlic beef & broccoli, lemon & garlic noodles with olives, applesauce, and not-sweet cinnamon cookies (love'em...more

The 21-Day Sugar Detox follows much of the same premise as Paleo but with added emphasis on eliminating sugar from your diet. There are three levels of the plan and the reader determines his or her level by taking a short quiz. Food lists and meal plans are provided for each level. Also included are the recipes for said meal plans. The information as presented is informative but not over the top with detail. I have made several recipes and haven't been disappointed yet. I was impressed with the...more

I'm going to do the 21DSD. It's a lighter version of Whole30, which I've already done before. This book explains the biology of how carbohydrates affect your metabolism. If you read this type of book before (like Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers, or It Starts with Food: Discover the Whole30 and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways you've gotten this explanation before. This book does it without being preachy. The meal plans are the most...more
Great program for anyone that has a serious sugar addiction! i.e. everyone breathing, haha! I have basically done this with going low carb, high fat (good fats), and high protein. There are a lot of great recipes for low carb and low sugar/sweet desserts. Everything is Paleo friendly (meaning no grains, legumes, etc.) There are 3 levels in the program and the author gives special considerations for athletes, pregnant & nursing moms, etc. I like books like this that go into detail about how s...more
I probably should wait until I actually finish this 21 day detox before I rate it but there are a few things I struggled with in this book. 1. Way too many meat recipe options in this plan. 2. The meal plans will not work for vegetarians. Not geared toward a vegetarian at all, only pescetarians and omnivores. Even so, there should be more seafood/fish recipes. I have not read the separate cookbook so maybe it has more of a variety. 3. Not enough talk of what to do after the 21 days. I feel like...more

Monday will start my third time doing the 21-day sugar detox. I find it to be a helpful reset when I've become a little lax in my healthful eating habits. This is the first time I have read the book along with the detox; I've always done it with just the online info I've found before. I did find some additional information in the books - the meal plans and supplements will be a great addition to my detox. Overall, this is a great plan, without any crazy diets, to put or, or reset you, into a low...more
I've been swindled by a pretty picture before, but this takes the sugar free cake. The pictures are what usually draws me to a cookbook. The recipes seemed to fit my lifestyle and I had most of the ingredients on hand. The problem: little to no spices used in the recipes. If you take our sugar and salt, you have to replace it with something that will make it palatable. Who wants to eat a diet of bland foods unless they are in a hospital? I did a couple of the recipes an tweaked them a bit to add...more

Great book with plenty of amazing information. I feel as though this could be a great, effective program for someone wanting to kick the sugar habit. However, it reads similarly to another program I was unsuccessful with and doesn't currently fit within my budget in terms of having to buy specialty products at this time. I think I'll go back to a program I've used in the past that worked well for me. That being said, I believe I learned some great information and I plan to use some of the recipe...more
I love reading cookbooks, and especially love when I find new recipes that I add into my 'regular' meal plan. The 21DSD is excellently written. It is very informative and not too much in scientific overload. The layout keeps you reading and turning the pages for more. AND the recipes are excellent. This book is helpful, encouraging and highly recommended. I started the 21DSD without this book and bought it on Day 4. You need to buy it in the beginning, even at the price point. Extremely helpful...more
